Describing the book:

It is set in 1757. The main character is John Trenchard, a fifteen-year-old boy who has come to live in the village of Moonfleet in Dorset, by the sea. There are smugglers in Moonfleet. Most are not bad men, but they are breaking the law. John made friends with Elzevir and Ratsey, two of these men. Elzevir lived and worked at The Mohune Arms. David Block, Elzevir’s only son, was killed by Maskew who lived in Moonfleet House, and Moonfleet people didn’t like him and he didn’t like them either.

There was a rumour that Blackbeard’s ghost comes out of his grave late at night, and he looks for a lost diamond that he got from King Charles at Carisbooke Castle. Blackbeard was John Mohune – dead for a hundred years.

One day, John Trenchard found John Mohune’s coffin, and some paper with words from the Bible written on it. He and Elzevir went on a trip to find Blackbeard’s lost diamond.

They found it at last and sold it. But they sold it to a dishonest dealer. So they protested to him. However the police arrested them.

Eleven years later, only John came back to Moonfleet, fortunately. Elzevir died on his way to Moonfleet. John got married to Grace who is Maskew’s daughter. He was happy there, near the sea.

The theme is happiness. The message is the most important thing is not money.

Responding to the book:

This book was very interesting and exciting. I learned the most important thing is not money, and money is a most horrible thing.

I thought the English level of this book was about right. I recommend this book to other students, because everyone should know what the most important thing is.
